How It Works

Two independent lines, not one

Rope access technicians descend from roof-mounted anchors on two separate systems: a working line that bears the technician's weight and controls descent, and an independent backup line connected to a fall-arrest device that only engages if the working line fails. Both lines are anchored to separate, certified points, so a single point of failure can't result in a fall. Technicians reposition using a bosun's chair or a sit harness, working their way down and across the facade in sections, re-anchoring at intermediate points as needed for setbacks or geometry changes.

Because the system is self-contained on two ropes rather than a hung platform, rope access handles irregular building shapes — setbacks, curved facades, mansards, and obstructed rooflines — more efficiently than a swing stage, which needs a track or traversable roof edge to work along.

Rope access vs. the alternatives

Choose rope access over swing stage when the facade geometry is irregular, when minimizing ground footprint and street disruption matters, or when the building lacks a davit/track system and installing one isn't justified. Choose swing stage instead when the elevation is large, flat, and a certified platform system already exists — it will usually cover more glass per hour once rigged. Choose a boom lift or water-fed pole instead for anything within ground-supported reach, since neither requires roof access at all.
