A water-fed pole system pumps purified water — run through a resin and reverse-osmosis filtration system to strip out dissolved minerals — through a telescoping pole fitted with a soft brush head at the tip. The brush agitates and lifts dirt from the glass while the pure water rinses it away; because the water carries no minerals, it evaporates without leaving spots, so there's no squeegee or wipe-down step needed. The technician works entirely from the ground or a stable platform, extending the pole to reach upper-floor glass without climbing or rigging anything.
This is the same purified-water principle used to finish glass on rope access and swing stage jobs at height — water-fed pole simply extends the technique to the reach of a physical pole instead of a suspended technician.
Water-fed pole is the least wind-sensitive method here at lower extension heights, since the technician stays on the ground, but wind still affects control and finish quality as the pole extends toward its maximum reach. The bigger constraint is temperature — below roughly 4°C, water can freeze on the glass or within the system before evaporating cleanly, so most operators pause this method during hard freezes, common for short stretches in a Metro Vancouver winter.
Water-fed pole work is the lowest-risk access method from a fall-protection standpoint since technicians remain at ground level, but it still falls under WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation Part 34 (Window Cleaning) for general safe-work practices, including awareness of overhead hazards, pedestrian protection, and safe pole handling near power lines. There's no anchor certification or platform inspection requirement, and municipal permits are rarely needed unless the work requires closing a sidewalk lane for hose or tank staging.
This is the lowest-disruption method available — no lift, no rigging, no roof access, and minimal ground footprint beyond a water source or tank. It's well suited to retail and storefront environments where any visible equipment or closure directly affects customer traffic.
Choose water-fed pole for any building or elevation within its height range where speed, low cost, and minimal disruption matter most — it's almost always the right default for low-rise glass. Choose a boom lift instead if the building is slightly taller but still ground-accessible and the ground surface supports it. Choose rope access or swing stage instead once height exceeds pole reach and no ground-supported option is viable.
